Feel the Burn…But Have Some Fun

As with most workouts, you usually don’t feel the pain until the following morning. I’ve been going through the same thing with my current fitness routine, except with a little extra pain added.

Last October I was in an accident that caused me severe neck pain. This pain was due to a bulging disc as a result of the impact of the crash. I went through about two months of rehab, two epidural shots in my cervical spine, and a lifetime of arthritis to look forward to in my neck. Needless to say, I am physically unable to complete various weight lifting movements that would effect the current state of my cervical spine. Sometimes modifying my workout still doesn’t help.  But I will NOT let that stop me!

I have a goal and I will attain it. A few little aches and pains, arthritis, or whatever won’t slow me down. I’m only going modify, adjust, and keep it moving.

Since today and tomorrow are workout off days, I will spend them doing yoga and making good use of my heating pad. Hopefully, the extra stretching will alleviate the pressure I’m currently experiencing in my neck. Ugh!

But on a lighter note, thanks to that monster, everyone is familiar with who eats all of their white socks and the suggestion from my friend Megs to keep wearing “fun socks”, I’m having a good time with my workout…

So, what are you doing to make your time at the gym fun?

A Different Kind of Fitness Journey

Last week a couple of co-workers and I decided to embark on a new journey. A journey not too typical of the average woman looking to incorporate a little exercise into her everyday routine.  We have decided to seriously train for an upcoming fitness competition here in Texas (fitness, not bodybuilding).  This idea did not just come on a whim. We were trying to set a goal bigger than just toning our biceps or losing 5 pounds, which, by the way, I cannot afford to lose! We wanted to work toward something different, something challenging, and something that meant cheating or cutting corners was not an option.

This new journey means that I now have to stick to a very strict high-protein diet and rigorous weight lifting routine. I now have a “high carb” day twice a week. When I said that out loud the other day when the hubby asked what I was having for lunch, I felt like a professional when saying, “Well, you know today is my high carb day.”  Ha! That’s insane!

The great thing is that the six meal-a-day diet means that I actually eat when I’m supposed to eat, whereas before I was only eating about two or three times per day. My mom will be happy about that! And I get to eat things that I like anyway without getting made fun of because now I have an excuse.  Eating five boiled eggs in the morning, a cup of blueberries, a handful of almonds, tilapia, or protein shakes made with honey and peanut butter now have a purpose in my life.  When someone glares at me while I stuff that last boiled egg in my mouth, I can confidently say, “Hey, I have a competition coming up man!” Instead saying hanging my head in shame wishing I had finished my bowl of eggs at home.

That not so great thing is getting all of my meals prepared ahead of time and knowing that when I go to work I must carry a huge bag packed with all of meals, protein powder, one gallon water bottle, mini blender, and whatever else I will need for the eight to ten hours I will be away from home.  This weekend I plan to get more plastic food containers, prepare my food for the week and pack them away in the freezer.  Man, there is a lot of work, planning, and organization that goes into this…geez!

Fortunately, I am getting a little help from the hubs through this journey.  He has become my official spotter in the weight room.  Although I’m not lifting 300 pounds barbells, that little sixty pounds I have to push up is brutal! I would surely drop the bar on my face or possible crush what little chest I have.  He has been great encouragement in the weight room helping me to keep going when my arms start feeling like noodles.

I cannot wait to see the results from all of the weight lifting and protein shakes! Maybe I will actually place in the competition. If not, I will move on to the  next one and see how far I can take this thing.

Here I am at the beginning of WEEK TWO! Ten more weeks to go…

The Top 5 Things I Learned From My Mother

In my twelve years of experience as a mother, I have found myself doing a lot of the same things my mother did. Not on purpose, mind you, because I never wanted to be like my mom- or so I thought.  But even during my first years of mother/wife hood, I seemed to automatically begin doing those things that I remember quite fondly as a child.

Let’s make it a movie night

Every Friday night my mom and I would go to the Chinese food restaurant down the street from our home in Chicago and order take out-  shrimp egg foo yung, shrimp fried rice, and an order of egg rolls. Then we would go further down the block to 79th Street Video to rent two or three movies for our own private viewing party.  After “Dallas” and “Falcon Crest” left us with our weekly cliff hanger, we would commence to watching our movies together.  That tradition has been carried on with my family.

The medium on which the movie is viewed has changed (no longer are we trekking up to the local video store to check out a limited number of video tapes), we are now able to watch a movie at home with just a simple click of a button on the remote. Bu no matter  how we do it, now or in the future, family movie night is a special event that I hope my children are able to share with their own families.

Change your bedding every week

“Why do you have to change your sheets every week?” This was a question asked by a friend one day when she stayed the night one weekend. My response…”Doesn’t everybody?” Apparently not.  She wondered why there was a need to change our collective sheets every week, as opposed to every other week or at a frequency more “normal”.  This routine made all the sense in the world to me. Though it was a tedious task, it had to be done. Who wants to roll around in more than a week’s worth of nighttime sweat?  Who likes to lay their head in a dried pool of over seven days of slobber? Or roll around in cracker crumbs left over from a Wednesday snack session? Not me! And my momma taught me not to…

Just as my mom taught me, my household changes our bedding on a weekly basis. I think I’ve taken it to another level by adding a little once over with the vacuum. Hey! Don’t judge me, that’s just how I roll.

Speaking of sheets…

Always have at least 4 different comforters that match the color scheme of your bedroom

Once again, this was exceptionally normal to me.  As a child I had a beautiful blue comforter with dinosaurs on it, a two-tone red and white comforter, and a couple of others I don’t recall at the moment.  I like having variety without completely changing the look of my room…and believe me, my room had a look.  I had a dinosaur border around my room that matched the blue comforter (all primary colors), a bright yellow wall, plush red carpet that must have had double padding (from Empire Carpet), a tall, plastic yellow shelf, a red and yellow Little Tikes picnic table, red vertical blinds, and various primary colored wall hangings.  I loved my room! How else could you pull together such a décor without the matching bedding?

Today, I have about five totally different comforters that all match the color scheme and style of my room.  It’s amazing how small, frequent changes of décor can drastically change your mood, your attitude, and your comfort level in a room which should be your personal sanctuary.

Never buy at retail

From a small child through my teen years, my mom and I used to spend most of our weekends trolling our fave discount retailers or department stores for the best deals.  I was taught as a very young that you can most certainly get quality clothing and household goods at an affordable price.  As long as you weren’t quick to buy those big fashion trends “of the season” or were willing to wait for a sale, you could get exactly what you wanted for a significant fraction of the retail price. I anticipated and enjoyed our shopping trips together.

TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Ross, and any department store clearance racks are and continue to be my go-to places for great deals.  I know that many of my friends truly abhor going shopping with because I can never get excited for them when purchasing an, albeit, awesome item, for a not so awesome price. I have set prices in my mind that I refuse to go over, no matter what the item.  For instance, I cannot bring myself to spend over $20 on a pair of jeans or over $15 on a button-down work shirt.  These standards are not preposterous, as they have been proven to exist.  I know that on any given day I can go to TJ Maxx and buy a quality pair of jeans from $15.99 to $19.99 or purchase a white button-down from The Limited for $13 on sale.  And these are not 1992 prices, I’m talking within the last two months.  And if you’re willing to wait a whole season to rock a new outfit, buy clearance items at the end of one season to wear in another. Getting a $3 bikini at beginning of Fall will look awesome for the following year at the pool. Buying a $20 peacoat at the start of Summer will look just as good as the same one someone else bought for $200 just three month prior.

I have ever known of this awesome way to shop if it were not for my mother.

Don’t be afraid to make changes to your home décor

At least every four to five months, my mom would complete a deep cleaning and massive furniture remix.  I learned that this was to ensure that we were not collecting things that we no longer had a need for. There was no such thing as hoarding in our house!  There were times I would come home from elementary school to find my old stuff animals were gone or clothes that could have lasted maybe one or two more days before getting too big were gone. My entire bedroom had been rearranged and the living room no longer looked the same.  This had been done all in one afternoon and with zero budget.  She simply took items from one room and swapped them for items from another.

I do the same thing in my house with my husband and he actually enjoys doing it. I call him the Master Arranger because he has a great eye for furniture placement.  We’ve redone all of our rooms at least six or seven times since we’ve moved in. We’re not afraid of color either. Our half bathroom has seen at least 4 color changes, the home office has undergone three colors alterations, and the game room is at its second color palette.  All courtesy of Home Depot’s “oops” paint section- $5 per gallon…thank you very much!

With all five of these great tidbits from my mom, I would not be the person that I am or the mother that I am. My kids look forward to our Friday night movie night, love getting/changing their sheets and blankets to discover what they will have next, and have fun rearranging their room from time to time.

Thank you Mom and happy Mother’s Day!Image

Top Five Skinny Girl Tips to Shopping on a Budget

Recently while out shopping, I realized that there are a few shopping techniques that I use that may seem really normal to me, but could be looked at as weird by others.

Being a woman in my thirties with a body of an eleven-year old boy, can be quite disconcerting, but I have learned to embrace it. With that in mind, I have come up with the Top Five Skinny Girl Tips to Shopping on a Budget.  I don’t mean to discriminate, but that’s all I know.  So here goes:

1. If you are a skinny girl lacking in the chestal region (yes, that is a word… in my mind), you may have experienced that finding a brassiere that fits without looking like a deflated shoulder pad on your chest, can be few and far between. To combat this issue, I head straight to the little girls section and pick up a training bra and save about $15!

That’s right, I said it. I’m owning it! I have been known to rock a training bra or two in my old age.

2. Sometimes if I am shopping for new graphic tees for my twelve-year old son, I find a shirt that I like. Who wouldn’t want a cool Optimus Prime t-shirt? Instead of spending $20 for an adult shirt that doesn’t look nearly as cool, I grab a boy’s size medium, short sleeved tee and save 5 to 10 bucks!

Skinny girl tip-make sure it’s short sleeved and long in the torso area. You may be getting a little boy’s shirt, but you don’t want to look like you’re wearing a little boy’s shirt.

3. When looking for exercise shorts, some stores seem to forget to keep a full stock of extra smalls. Do they think that women who are already extra small don’t need exercise gear? Geez! So, I must take a trip to the little girls section…again.

There, I am able to find exercise shorts that fit me quite well in a size large. Wow! I just saved $10 to $20!

4. Over the winter, the hubs got in on the game. One day he presented me with a nice white, down bubble vest. It fit perfectly! It was super loose in the chestal region and had a more fitted look than any other ones I had tried on just a few weeks earlier. Why, do you ask? Because it was a little boy’s size 8! A savings of $10 – $15 off the price of an adult’s bubble vest.

5. Last, but not least… My favorite! I love crazy knit, winter hats. You know, the bright greens ones with a frog face on it or the wool ones with the ear flaps, strings on the side and a big fluffy ball on top? Those are the ones I love! I might get crazy looks from coatless, hatless, mittenless people here in Texas, but I like to be warm and I like to be cute… at least in my mind.

I know what you’re saying, what does being a skinny girl have to do with hats? Well, it has been my experience that most adult hats don’t fit my head. I can only assume that it’s because of my size or it could be just that I have a little head, but who knows…

The cutest hats are in the children’s department. It’s like a cool, cute hat wonderland! I save at least $10.

Bonus skinny girl tip- When it’s time for my bi-annual eye exam, I always feel inclined to get a completely new pair of glasses, despite the fact that my prescription hasn’t changed since high school.  But, who wants to spend upwards of $200 or more on a pair of glasses? Again, I must defer to my skinny girl-little head theory and venture over to the kids’ frames section.

Kids frames have really changed since I was a kid. No longer are your only options pink frames for girls and blue or brown frames for boys.  Their section is almost as expansive as the adults’.  I am able to save over $100 on glasses. Not bad!

Well, that’s my top five plus a bonus.  If you’re horizontally lacking as I am, this list may help you save a few dollars on your next shopping trip. You’re welcome, in advance!

Supposed Wrong

I recently had a discussion with a group of people who were talking about all of the things they had been told they were “supposed” to be doing with their lives.

I dont know about you, but I was told, from a very early age that I was “supposed” to go to college in order to be successful in life. So, I walked around for twenty two years with the idea that if I didn’t graduate high school, get into college, and graduate, I would be a failure. I would be jobless, broke, and probably homeless. This must’ve been some type of propaganda for Generation  X because I wasn’t the only one who had this notion ingrained in my brain at an early age.

Needless to say, college isn’t always the answer to success. Just ask the people in the unemployment line who have a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree if they think all of their years of schooling has paid off. Or ask all of those college drop-outs who run successful companies or who are super happy with their lives, sans degree.

I learned pretty quickly, all of those fabulous jobs that were “supposed” to be awaiting me the Monday after graduation, were  nothing but a dream. Lets just say, it took ten years to get into the field I studied in college and about $35,000 in student loans.

Don’t get me wrong, education is important, but it shouldn’t be the only key to what is “supposed” to unlock your life’s success. Instead, maybe travelling abroad, learning new cultures, and  gaining awesome experiences will help to propel you where you’re “supposed” to be.

Most people are told that you are “supposed” to get married, have kids, and buy a home. So, you go through life with that in mind without really wanting it. You want to attain all of it because that is what you are “supposed” to do. But, what if what you actually want is to remain single, adopt five kids, and live in an apartment?

Sometimes I think we get so busy trying to do what our parents said we are ”supposed” to do, we never really took the time to figure out what it is we really want to do with our lives.

Maybe if we were told that not only are all of those things we are “supposed” to do good, but that there are alternatives and those are good too, there would be so many less confused people in the world still trying to figure it all out at forty.

Turn Your Day at the Gym into a Spa Day

I know it sounds weird, but you have to keep an open and imaginative mind.  There will be times where I won’t feel like going to the gym to keep my body fit, so I have come up with a way to keep me motivated to go to the gym beyond the great classes and the multitude of exercise machines.

Here is how I have transformed my gym day to a spa day:

Massage Therapy

This may be a strectch (no pun intended) for some, but if you really think about it and have a great imagination you just may see it my way.  Massage is the manipulation of muscles in a very soothing and or invgorating way. What better way to get a massage, than to practice yoga.  The stretches, maneuvers, and poses you do with your body can be very beneficial to the body.  There are poses that literally allows your body to massage your internal organs (cat pose, spinal twist, and downward facing dog), muscles to massage other muscles (cow face pose and triangle pose), and put your mind and body in a state of relaxation to a point where you are able to fall asleep (corpse pose).

Muscle manipulation, soothing stretches, relaxation, and sleep? That sounds like a massage therapy session if I ever heard one!

Steam Facial and Hair Treatment

After that great massage, a facial may be next on your list.  This is where the steam room comes in.  After working out, head to the locker room, get changed out of those clothes, and don one of those  beautiful white towels or two and head over to the steam room.  For an added bonus, slap a little hair conditioner on your hair for a two for one steam treatment.

I don’t know about your gym, but the one I go to has a eucalyptus steam room! What! Yes, the wonderful smell of eucalyptus! There are so many benefits to eucalyptus- it treats congestion, sinus headaches, stress, bronchitis, …the list goes on and on.

So how can steam benefit your face (and exposed skin on your body)? Utilizing steam for the face and body can be effective in removing acne and acne scars. Steam opens up the pores and increases sweating. The sweat cleanses the pores of excess oil, grime and dirt  and also has a antibacterial effect (due to the salt produced), reducing bacteria levels in the skin and giving a thorough, yet gentle cleansing. Steam also stimulates blood circulation to the skin resulting in a greater supply of oxygen and nutrients while moistening and softening the skin.

As far as using the steam room for your hair,  there are many excellent benefits! The steam helps intensify the moisture levels of the hair by opening the hair’s cuticle to allow the conditioner to penetrate deeper. Frequent steam treatments will enhance the condition of hair, locking in moisture and reducing breakage. Steaming the hair while deep conditioning infuses as much moisture to your hair as your hair will allow. Afterwards, the hair becomes shinier and softer and less prone to frizzing up in humidity. And if your hair is naturally curly like mine, that is a god send!

So let’s recap, after one day in the gym your muscles have been rejuvenated, you are super relaxed, your skin is glowing and refreshed, your hair is soft and silky, and oh yeah… you had a great work out!

I can’t wait to get to the gym!!

Ready, Set, Go…

Today, I finally got my workout schedule together so that I would actually stick to it.  I have learned that if I don’t put what I need to do in my cell phone calendar or task list, I, most likely, won’t get it done.  So, I took a look at the classes the gym offers during the week, put them into my schedule, and hope the reminder notifications go off when they are supposed to!

I was also inspired by a couple of blogs I’ve read  to look up some good juicer recipes to add to my new workout routine and healthier eating habits. My faves so far has been one made of spinach and pineapple and also one made with peanut butter, banana, milk, and honey….yummy! The next step is to create weekly recipes to make sure I get in all of the food groups, vitamins, proteins, etc. I need.  I tend to go too long, within a course the day, without eating. Not because I’m starving myself, but because hunger pangs are something that I am rarely afflicted with.  I always get the “eye roll” response when I say that I can sometimes forget to eat, so I’ll spare you that excuse, no matter how true it is.

I’ve also found that if I have an end goal in mind when attempting to change my diet and exercise routine, I will be more apt to stick to the new routine. Exercising for the sake of exercising or because it was on my New Year’s resolution list, is not good enough.  There needs to be a reachable and realistic goal to attain to keep you motivated, focused, and challenged. My goal is definitely not to lose weight, but to firm up a couple of key areas, maintain a healthy diet, and set an example to my children that no matter your size or shape, having a healthly lifestyle is important.  Once I reach each goal, I will set another and then another…

Next post- how to turn a gym day into a spa day… without the spa cash!

Adding and Subtracting

Today I was thinking over this past super stressful week and I may have rubbed one or two people the wrong way. Either by the hardness of my countenance or the slice of my words.

There are several things, that I am aware of that affect my mood and attitude- hunger, pain, unorganization, and the start of my “special” time of the month. Let’s just say, this week was a tornado of all of the above!

I have decided, before I walk out of a room or out of the presence of anyone, I must say to myself, “Did I just add or subtract to that person or persons life?” If I have subtracted (imparted negativity), I must go back, apologize, or make it right.

There are people in this world, it seems, that have one thing they say to themselves everyday, “How many lives can I upset today?” I may slip up every once in a while, but that is someone I don’t want to be- an emotional crusher of anyone who crosses my path. Apologies to anyone I have given the evil eye or the sharp tongue this past week.

So, are you an adder or subtractor? And how many habitual subtractors do you know?

Beautiful Day

image

As I was enjoying this wonderful 75 degree day and thinking about the cervical epidural I would have to undergo later today, I happened across this beautiful statue and it put a big smile on my face.

Jesus was able to endure what most would not and for people of whom he did not know. He had the faith to endure it all, despite it all, for all!

Even Jesus was a servant to others, why can’t I be?

What’s Your Story?

Last night was the start of a new semester on my journey to a Master’s degree.  Despite my day being long as hell, I was awake enough to sit through two classes or five hours worth of knowledge.  Just as I was getting my fill of the information overload that should never happen on the first day of classes, particularly during the final hours of a day, my interest was piqued.

My professor showed a video from one of the TED Talks series.  A beautiful Nigerian woman was speaking about her experiences in Nigeria and various interactions she with people once she arrived in the United States. She spoke about how most of us have a blanketed two-dimensional perception about different races, people from other countries, and how the media plays a part in shaping our views of others.

For the most part, we don’t choose to look at others from a balanced point-of-view. We, basically, let what we see in the news, magazines, blogs, etc. form our opinions for us . We must become more conscious of how we see people and how it can effect our interactions and judgements with and of  them, even before we meet.

Please take a look at this video and begin to choose to change how you see others.
